‘Scream 7’: Courteney Cox Is In Talks To Return As Gale Weathers For Kevin Williamson’s Upcoming Sequel

Earlier this month, news broke that Neve Campbell would return as Sydney Prescott for “Scream 7” as the slasher franchise starts from scratch. Now it appears another Woodsboro resident will also be back: Courteney Cox‘s Gale Weathers. Variety reports that Cox is in talks to reprise her role for the seventh chapter in the Spyglass series, with original “Scream” creator Kevin Williamson also returning to direct.

This news shouldn’t surprise “Scream” fans. Cox’s Weathers has been in every franchise installment so far, including “Scream 6,” which Campbell sat out of due to a salary dispute. As for who else will return, who knows? After the past two sequels centered around a new generation of Woodsboro teens, Melissa Barrera‘s firing last November and Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon‘s subsequent exits have the franchise reeling. That leaves “Scream 7” with several open questions, like if new stars Jasmin Savoy Brown or Mason Gooding will return, or if the series will go back to Woodsboro after “Scream 6” was set in NYC.

But Williamson will answer all of those questions in due time. As for Campbell, she sounds excited to reunite with the scribe of the original “Scream.” “While I’ve been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt and Tyler team, I’ve dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it’s happening,” she wrote in a March 12 Instagram post. Williamson followed up with his own Instagram post, writing, “I am overcome with gratitude and excitement, and I can’t wait to take this journey with Neve and the entire ‘Scream’ family as we bring back Sidney Prescott in the next chapter of the ‘Scream’ franchise.”

With Barrera and Ortega gone after the original plans for “Scream 7” fell apart, it’s likely Gooding or Savoy Brown will leave too. But Gooding predicted earlier this month that the sequel would still happen. “If it could make money, I guarantee you, they’ll make it,” he told Variety. “It’s all about keeping up with what feels like is the best movie for the fans. … If people want it, they will certainly try their best to see it happen.”

So what does Kevin Williamson have in mind for “Scream 7” now that Campbell and (maybe) Cox are back? Expect more news about the upcoming sequel soon.
