'Self Reliance': Jake Johnson Teams Up With The Lonely Island For A New Comedy About A Man On The Run From Assassins

Perhaps you just saw the new Peacock comedy from the Please Don’t Destroy guys and it got you thinking—what happened to the other ‘SNL’ digital shorts people, The Lonely Island? Well, wouldn’t you know it? They’re still making films, and their latest is “Self Reliance,” a new comedy coming to Hulu next month.

As seen in the trailer for “Self Reliance,” the comedy follows the story of a middle-aged guy who signs up to star in a “dark web reality TV show” that puts him in the position of being hunted by random assassins over the course of 30 days. No matter what time of day it is, he could be murdered. The trick is that he is completely safe if he’s next to someone else. So, as you might imagine, he enlists a several folks to “shadow” him, and hilarity ensues.

The film stars Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Andy Samberg, GaTa, Emily Hampshire, Mary Holland, Boban Marjanović, Christopher Lloyd, and Wayne Brady. In addition to starring in the film, Johnson is also the director, making his feature debut with the film.

“Self Reliance” debuts on Hulu on January 12, 2024. You can watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

When a middle-aged man (Jake Johnson, “New Girl”) is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg, his dull life takes a thrilling turn. Johnson is offered a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show, where assassins from all over the world attempt to kill him for 30 days. The catch? He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.
