The name M. Night Shyamalan carries very specific connotations. While he has dabbled in genres outside of suspense and horror, the filmmaker’s normally attached to a very specific type of film/TV projects. His work is normally highlighted by tons of atmosphere, dread, and tension. Whether it’s a story about a kid who can see dead people, a man with two dozen personalities, or kids visiting their grandparents, each film and TV project from Shyamalan is going to deliver plenty of creepy, edge of your seat suspense. And that’s definitely the case with the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Servant.”
And with the premiere of “Servant” right around the corner, we’re happy to give our readers an exclusive piece from the film’s soundtrack that definitely fits right in with what you expect from a Shyamalan series. “Little Leanne,” the track you can listen to below, oozes that creepy, skin-crawling feeling that the very best horror scores elicit. And considering the series’ subject matter (the less you know going in, the better), this is pitch-perfect. The music is composed by Trevor Gureckis, who is probably best known for his work on recent films “The Goldfinch” and “Bloodline.”
“’The Servant’s’ musical sonic palate of clanging percussion, prepared piano, wailing bowed instruments, and detuned strings and winds came about from M. Night and I having the unified willingness to take the time to explore as many ideas as possible, in search of the right sound for the series,” the composer said. “I started with a rather full orchestral concept but we soon realized that with the whole show taking place in a single house, almost like a play, it needed an intimate sound with small objects.”
He continued, “As the series progresses, existential threats develop and likewise the score expands. Hearing one of the early tracks like ‘Welcome’ or ‘Monitor’ with its austere brutalism and then the textural complexity of the final track ‘The Servant,’ gives you a sense of the journey we go through within these 10 episodes.”
The series stars Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Rupert Grint, and Nell Tiger Free. As mentioned, “Servant” is executive produced and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The series is created and written by Tony Basgallop, who previously scripted episodes of “24: Live Another Day,” “24: Legacy,” and most recently, “Berlin Station.”
“Servant” debuts on Apple TV+ on November 28. The “Servant” soundtrack will be released, courtesy of Lakeshore Records, on November 28 via Apple Music before making its way to iTunes on January 3, 2020, and everywhere else on March 6, 2020.
Here’s the synopsis for the series:
A new psychological thriller from M. Night Shyamalan that follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home.
