Remember that star-studded short list of directors that were rumored to take over for Danny Boyle on ‘Bond 25?’ Yeah, it appears that dreams of David Mackenzie, Edgar Wright, and Jean-Marc Vallee taking over the 007 franchise are long gone. But one name from the list still remains, and there are a couple others joining him.
Yann Demange, the director behind “’71” who was already the frontrunner to take over ‘Bond 25’ before Danny Boyle swooped in, is still the leader of the pack. According to Variety, the director already had a great first meeting with ‘Bond’ producers, but they want to check out his latest feature, “White Boy Rick” (read our Telluride review), before seriously considering him.
However, the new names that seem to be on the real short list for ‘Bond 25’ include Bart Layton and S.J. Clarkson. No shade being thrown at these two, but it must be said that the idea of an A-list filmmaker taking over the franchise seem to be out the window. Layton is probably best known for his documentary work, particularly on “The Imposter.” Earlier this year, the director released his first narrative feature, “American Animals,” to critical acclaim at Sundance. Obviously, the jump from small indie to ‘Bond’ is huge, but not unheard of.
Clarkson might be the most interesting of the group, however. The British director has a ton of experience on the TV side of the industry, working on series like “Life on Mars,” “Dexter,” “Jessica Jones,” and “The Defenders.” She was also signed on to helm the upcoming “Star Trek 4,” but with that film appearing to have some behind-the-scenes issues, perhaps she’ll have time to work on ‘Bond 25?’ Obviously, if she does, it would be a major first for the franchise, as Clarkson would be the first female to direct a film in the super spy franchise.
Variety says that producers have yet to meet with Layton and Clark, but are planning to. So, as of this moment, it looks like Demange has the early edge, but it doesn’t look like this ‘Bond 25’ director search is wrapping up anytime soon.
