What would you do if your son gets kidnapped? Would you go on a “Taken”-style revenge mission, murdering anyone in your path? Or maybe you’ll do a “John Wick”-style revenge mission where you, once again, murder anyone in your path? Well, if you’re LeBron James, you avenge the kidnapping of your son by teaming up with cartoon characters to play a game of basketball against the criminal who has your child. Honestly, “Space Jam 2” really should have gone for the “John Wick” action, right?
As seen in the latest trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the highly anticipated sequel arrives later this summer and stars LeBron James as, well, uh, LeBron James. But where this film takes a hard right and ventures into fantasy land is when the story shows how James’ son is kidnapped by a “computer dude” and the athlete is sent to the animated realm of the Looney Tunes characters to recruit a basketball team to win back his son. Yes, it’s hard to take the plot seriously when something so dramatic and traumatic for a parent to go through is undercut by Looney Tunes humor. But, hey, kids will love it.
Joining LeBron James in the human cast are Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green. And perhaps the biggest name in the voice cast is Zendaya, who takes over the role of Lola Bunny. The film comes from director Malcolm D. Lee, who is probably best known for films such as “Night School,” “Girls Trip,” and “Undercover Brother.”
