'Fear Street Trilogy' Trailers: A Trio Of Horror Films From The Mind Of R.L Stine Hit Netflix In July

For those that grew up in the ’90s, R.L. Stine and his “Goosebumps” book series are ubiquitous with grade school, book fairs, and a young reader’s first toe-dip into the horror genre. Nearly twenty years after the series’ heydey, “Goosebumps” made it to the big screen in 2015, with a sequel following in 2018. Stine’s other, earlier, and just as popular horror book series for teenagers, “Fear Street,” gets the cinematic treatment with “The Fear Street Trilogy,” coming to Netflix in July.

Condensing a 51-title series to a mere three films may sound impossible, but writer/director Leigh Janiak (2014’s ‘Honeymoon‘) is up to the challenge. The premise is straightforward: a group of teens seeks to uncover the terrifying secret history of their hometown. Each installment focuses on a particular year in Shadyside’s history, with an iconic horror sub-genre prevalent for each year: teen horror in “Part 1: 1994,” the summer camp slasher in “Part 2: 1978,” and supernatural horror in “Part 3: 1666.” On top of that, all three films are R-rated, so this is a much different “Fear Street” than thirty years ago.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and that they may be the next targets. Based on R.L. Stine’s best-selling horror series, the trilogy follows the nightmare through Shadyside’s sinister history.

The cast of all three films is too large to list completely here, but plenty of them appear in two or more installments. Those include Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Julia Rehwald, Fred Hechinger, and Ashley Zukerman. Stranger Things” cast members Maya Hawke and Sadie Sink are also on board, as is Gillian Jacobs, who starred in another Netflix show, “Love.” Darrell Britt-Gibson, Jordana Spiro, Jordyn DiNatale, Emily Rudd, and Jeremy Ford also show up throughout the trilogy.

Janiak directed all three films and co-wrote them with Phil Graziadei (‘1994’), Zak Olkewicz (‘1978), and Kate Trefy (‘1666’). The trilogy’s first film had plans to release in theaters last June, with the other two parts of the series coming out in subsequent months in 2020, but COVID-19 derailed those plans. So now the films premiere over three straight Fridays on Netflix next month.
