Got a Tip?

Starz Is Developing A ‘Weeds’ Sequel Series Starring Mary Louise Parker

Weeds” is a series that seemed a bit ahead of its time. The Showtime dramedy debuted in an era where each and every new series from a premium cable network was something worth checking out. And though it might have slipped a bit in the final seasons, “Weeds” still holds up as one of the better prestige series to come out of an era where HBO, Showtime, and other networks were still trying to figure things out with original programming.

So, now that we’re in a new era where there’s an ever-increasing need for original content to fill the ever-growing number of streaming services and cable networks, it appears that Lionsgate is ready to dust off the “Weeds” IP and give it another go over at Starz.

According to Variety, Lionsgate is ready to move forward with a new “Weeds” sequel series set 10 years after the events of the first show. The new show, written and developed by Victoria Morrow, who worked on “Weeds” previously, follows the Botwins, a full decade after we last saw them, as they deal with the new status quo of legal weed. And yes, that means Mary Louise Parker, who found herself nominated multiple times for Primetime Emmys and Golden Globes for her work, will return.

“As excited as we are about our new series, I want to remind everyone that ‘the old is also new,’ and we’re pleased to be bringing two of the most acclaimed shows in television history, ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Weeds,’ to the global syndication marketplace next year, ”Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said. “We will be launching the marketing campaign for ‘Mad Men,’ winner of 16 Emmys and five Golden Globes during its eight-year run, later this month. And we’re thrilled to be back in business with series star and producer Mary Louise Parker on what we’re calling ‘Weeds 4.20,’ already in active development at Starz, as we prepare a comprehensive and integrated rollout for one of television’s most beloved properties.”

One person who isn’t confirmed to return, and isn’t involved in any capacity at this time, is “Weeds” creator Jenji Kohan. While Kohan was a regular in the realm of TV writing, the creator really broke out thanks to “Weeds.” From the success of this series, Kohan would go on to produce and create shows like “Orange is the New Black” and “GLOW.”

No word on when we might see “Weeds” return but the Botwin family is returning.
