Your cinematic prayers have been answered: Stephen Sommers will return to direct “G.I. Joe 2.”
We’re not sure how this even got greenlit considering the first installment, though profitable, was barely the blockbuster Paramount was hoping for, but perhaps enough people bought moulded plastic figurines to make this worthwhile. Depending on who you asked, Sommers and Paramount either had a fight or didn’t in the lead up to the film’s release last year, but whatever it was, it appears everybody is best friends again.
We frankly wouldn’t give two shits about this sequel except that “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick penned the script, which might make it somewhat tolerable. Channing Tatum is expected to return and reprise his role as Capt. Duke Hauser but the real question mark for us is if Joseph Gordon-Levitt will reprise Cobra Commander; a pretty big cliffhanger was left for him to come back and frankly, he was only decent thing in “G.I. Joe” at all.
No release dates or production timelines have been set but it’s a safe guess that this is being planned for a 2012 bow.
