Filmmaker Andrew Bujalski has made a name for himself as a bit of a festival darling, with his recent films “Computer Chess” and “Results” getting premieres at Sundance. His latest film, “Support the Girls,” had its premiere at this year’s South by Southwest and caught the eye of Magnolia Pictures, who are now planning to release the film later this summer. And in the first trailer, we see that ‘Girls’ is a bit of a departure for Bujalski.
“Support the Girls” follows the manager of a Hooters-esque restaurant that is staffed with beautiful women. However, there’s a lot of drama for the manager, played by Regina Hall, as she has to deal with corporate pressure, a-hole customers, and a staff of 20-somethings that seem to be constantly involved in some sort of shenanigans. If this sounds like a broad comedy, in the same vein as Ryan Reynolds’ “Waiting,” then you wouldn’t be wrong. However, with Bujalski at the helm, the film attempts to have the laughs but also include a ton of heart and great acting.
That being said, “Support the Girls” isn’t what you would expect as the new film from the guy who is one of the foremost filmmakers in the “mumblecore” subgenre of indie film. Perhaps Bujalski is attempting to cross over into more mainstream fare with this comedy, or the trailer is leaning heavily on the slapstick. Either way, it looks interesting and above all, entertaining.
“Support the Girls” is scheduled to hit theaters on August 24 before hitting VOD on August 28.
