David Lynch Responds To Backlash And Says Trump Is "Causing Suffering And Division"

A lot has been made of the recent comments from legendary filmmaker David Lynch about President Donald Trump. To say the comments have been the source of much debate on social media is an understatement. As we have said in both our pieces about Lynch and Trump, this all began with a quote that has been wildly taken out of context but is definitely still problematic.

And in our last piece, written earlier today, we ended by hoping that Lynch, himself, would come forward with an explanation, not an apology, to help everyone understand why he said that Trump could go down as “one of the greatest Presidents” of all-time. Well, thanks to Lynch’s Facebook page, we finally did get a response.

“I wish you and I could sit down and have a talk,” writes Lynch to Trump in a recent FB post. This is in response to Donald Trump taking to Twitter and a recent rally to praise the filmmaker’s comments (and by doing so, taking them out of context).

“Unfortunately, if you continue as you have been, you will not have a chance to go down in history as a great president. This would be very sad it seems for you – and for the country. You are causing suffering and division,” the filmmaker continues.

He ends with a plea to Trump, imploring the President to fix that suffering and division, saying, “It’s not too late to turn the ship around. Point our ship toward a bright future for all. You can unite the country. Your soul will sing. Under great loving leadership, no one loses – everybody wins. It’s something I hope you think about and take to heart. All you need to do is treat all the people as you would like to be treated.”

And with that, David Lynch ended his statement. Now, we’ll have to see if that silences the debate online, or if like anything with Trump as the subject, the news will continue to polarize. And to those who are upset about The Playlist’s (tongue-in-cheek) threat of burning Blu-rays, don’t worry – we only poured the lighter fluid on them, but we never struck the match. So, crisis averted!
