Some who had been following the production of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” would be aware that actress Sydney Sweeney was spotted on the set and was expected to have a minor cameo in the fashion world sequel. However, it doesn’t look like Sweeney has made the final cut of the film.
A report hailing from Entertainment Weekly has revealed that, due to a “creative decision,” her scene has been removed from the sequel. Adding that the cameo would have taken place toward the beginning of the film, while giving a more context of WHY it was nixed.
“As it appears in the film, the trio arrives at the Dior offices to seek Emily’s help. Initially, however, Sweeney appeared in a scene that expanded upon Emily’s introduction, and saw her at work dressing a celebrity client, with Sweeney playing herself in the reported three-minute scene. EW has learned that the scene did not work structurally with the rest of the sequence, and that the team working on the movie was grateful for her participation, making the decision to remove the bit a difficult one.”
That certainly sounds like a very coordinated reasoning for having Sweeney removed from the film, with mostly kind wording in an effort to likely soften the blow. Unknown if this choice to ditch the scenes was coming from the director David Frankel or Disney/20th Century Studios.
Those keeping track, Sweeney isn’t without her controversies, as she saw backlash after a weird ad for clothing brand American Eagle that was perceived by many as being tasteless and possibly pushing white superiority narratives. It didn’t help when given the platform during an interview to set the record straight, Sweeney refused to comment on it further.
More recently, the actress has been getting new flak for participating in what some are seeing as misogynistic nude/sexualized scenes in the recent season of “Euphoria” (her character, Cassie Howard, is creating fetish porn videos for OnlyFans, more porn-brain plots from juvenile creator Sam Levinson echoing his disliked exploitative project “The Idol“).
We have no idea if these things had any real influence on her scenes being removed, as the EW source is suggesting it was simply not working in the edit, so we’ll have to assume that is accurate. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” is set to hit theaters on May 1 with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci returning.
