Taika Waititi "Won't Be Involved" If Marvel Wants 'Thor 5' & Says His 'Star Wars' Film Is "Still Marinating"

Though the general consensus is that “Thor: Love and Thunder” is a disappointing entry in the franchise, the film still earned more than $760 million globally. Given the disastrous start for “The Marvels” and Marvel’s recent woes, perhaps ‘Thor 4’ will be getting a bit of revisionist history soon enough, and that might mean the studio would be interested in calling up Taika Waititi to see if he’s ready for yet another Asgardian adventure. Well, according to the filmmaker, he’s ready to move on… for now.

Speaking to Business Insider, while promoting his upcoming film, “Next Goal Wins,” Taika Waititi was asked about the likelihood of him returning to Marvel Studios for another ‘Thor’ film. This comes after Waititi has directed the most recent two films in the franchise, both regarded as highlights of the ‘Thor’ film series. Waititi, though happy to work with Marvel again in the future, won’t have time for a fifth ‘Thor’ film, if asked.

“I know that I won’t be involved,” said Waititi. “I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”

He added, “But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris [Hemsworth]…I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”

One of those projects that he’s already signed on for is the long-teased “Star Wars” film. Depending on who you ask, it’s either definitely happening or maybe not so much. According to Waititi, it’s still very much in development.

“It’s still marinating. I’ve been writing it,” he teased.

In addition to “Star Wars,” he’s also signed on to direct a number of other projects, including “Klara and the Sun,” as well as “The Incal.” At this point, Waititi believes ‘Klara’ will be his next project.

So, this would seem as if it’s bad news for fanboys hoping Waititi would either return to the MCU or venture off into “Star Wars” land. For now, it seems as if Waititi has other things on his plate, and he’s perfectly content with that.

“Next Goal Wins” debuts in theaters on November 17.
