Taika Waititi In Talks To Direct Sci-Fi Film 'Klara & The Sun' Based On Kazuo Ishiguro Novel

The number of outstanding genre projects that Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit“) is attaching himself keeps growing as the Kiwi filmmaker is still developing a mysterious “Star Wars” feature film after working on “The Mandalorian” and is trying to put together a new live-action remake of “Flash Gordon for 20th Century as well. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget “Akira.” There is now word that the filmmaker has another sci-fi film in the works on top of the two other big ones.

A project about a young robot has caught his interest as Deadline reports Waititi is in talks to direct a feature adaptation of “Klara & The Sun,” a sci-fi novel that was authored by Kazuo Ishiguro (“Never Let Me Go“) and is said to be potentially his next directorial effort.

The story focuses on a young robot named Klara and as expected has a much deeper philosophical lesson to be learned about, like what does it mean to love? Certainly, great material for Waititi to work with, who is known for films with young leads striking a rapport with audiences. Dahvi Waller (“Mrs. America“) penned the original draft of the script and there is an assumption Waititi, an Oscar-winning screenwriter, would add his own flare to the script as well.

Below is the novel’s official synopsis via Penguin Random House:

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her.

This isn’t the only high-profile film based on Ishiguro in the works as Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water“) is looking to make another stop-motion animated film at Netflix as a follow-up to his Best Animated Film Oscar win for “Pinocchio,” which is an adaptation of Ishiguro’s fantasy novel “The Buried Giant.”

Waititi’s upcoming sports comedy “Next Goal Wins” will debut in theaters on November 17.
