Taika Waititi Confirms Work Is Still Being Done On ‘Star Wars’ Film: “I’ve Got A Really Good Idea For It”

Back in early April, during the fan-focused Star Wars Celebration, many folks were expecting clarity regarding the future of the “Star Wars” franchise on the big screen. For years prior, there were reports of films that were in development, but then we’d get other news about drama behind the scenes, directors coming and going, and general disarray at Lucasfilm. But Celebration was set to be the time when we get an idea of what the future will hold. And while we did get answers, a lot of those answers only presented more questions, such as the status of Taika Waititi’s “Star Wars” project.

Well, in a new interview with THR, Taika Watiti offers an update about his long-in-development “Star Wars” film, which he is slated to write and direct. And while there’s still plenty of confusion surrounding the future of the franchise, at least we know Waititi is actually still developing his “Star Wars” tale.

When asked about the status of his “Star Wars” film, which we know very little about, Waititi replied, “I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.’”

No, that doesn’t really shed much light on the specifics of his “Star Wars” film, but it’s clear that it’s still something that Waititi is working on. And that is probably as much clarity as we can ask for right now. As mentioned above, at Celebration, we were told about three new films that were in development and would be the focus of what Lucasfilm is doing with the “Star Wars” franchise on the big screen. One is the film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which would see the return of Daisy Ridley. Another is a film directed by Dave Filoni, tying together the various TV shows into one big film. And then another film by James Mangold

There was no mention of Taika Waititi or the other filmmakers who were previously reported as working on “Star Wars” films. Though, if Waititi is to be believed, he’s still developing it. However, with the next 6 or 8 years of “Star Wars” films already announced, who knows if or when we might see it.
