All the signs are pointing to filmmaker Terrence Malick to make his return to Cannes, after winning the Palme d’Or for “The Tree of Life” back in 2011, this year with his latest film “Radegund.” But according to a new report, if the film does show up at the French film festival, it’ll have a new title.
IndieWire is reporting that Malick’s latest film is actually titled “A Hidden Life.” Obviously, we’ll likely hear confirmation of this title change in a couple of weeks, if “A Hidden Life” is announced as part of the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The film is said to be a World War II drama about the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, played by August Diehl, who was an objector to the war and suffered a tragic fate in 1943, at the hands of the Third Reich.
Fans of Malick have been waiting for “A Hidden Life” for years. Dating all the way back in 2016, when the film first went before cameras. Since then, there have been rumors of Malick’s project getting a festival release a number of times, each leading to disappointment. However, in recent weeks, rumors have been swirling that the filmmaker is finally finished with the film and is interested in a Cannes debut.
After the filming was completed, actors Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz, who appear in the film, passed away, making “A Hidden Life” their final roles on the big screen. Joining these gentlemen and Diehl in the cast are Valerie Pachner, Jürgen Prochnow, and Matthias Schoenaerts.
There’s still no release date for the film, but it’s likely we’ll learn more if/when “A Hidden Life” makes its debut in France in May.
