Got a Tip?

The 70 Most Anticipated TV Shows & Mini-Series Of 2024

20.Tokyo Vice” (Season 2)
Micheal Mann is no longer really involved, but “Tokyo Vice,” about an American reporter on the police beat in Japan, starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe, has been well-set up for continued success. The supporting cast includes Rachel Keller, Hideaki Itō, Shō Kasamatsu, Ella Rumpf, Rinko Kikuchi, and Tomohisa Yamashita.
Airdate: TBD via HBO.

19. “Alien
It hasn’t finished filming, but showrunner Noah Hawley (“Fargo”) recently said his horror/sci-fi “Alien” prequel spin-off, which hasn’t finished filming, could arrive in 2024, and that’s good enough for us. Set three decades before the events of the 1979 film” Alien,” the series stars Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Essie Davis, and Adarsh Gourav. Ridley Scott is a partially involved executive, but it really sounds like Hawley’s show.
Airdate: Likely end of year 2024 via FX/Hulu, and hey, 2025 is still a possibility, according to another Hawley interview. Who knows? Fingers crossed.

18. “Ripley”
It’s another run at Patricia Highsmith novels about the infamous Tom Ripley character brought to life in films like  “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Ripley’s Game.” This version comes from Steven Zaillian (“The Irishman”) and starts with the series’ first books, capturing Tom Ripley in the early ‘60s, traveling to Italy at the behest of a man who wants his son to come home. Andrew Scott, the scene-stealer from the second season of “Fleabag,” steps into the charming criminal’s shoes.
Airdate: TBD via Netflix, who bought it from Showtime in Feb 2023.

17. “Dark Matter”
From writer Blake Crouch (“Wayward Pines“) comes a sci-fi series about a Chicago physicist warped into an alternate version of his life, leaving him to fight to return to his life to prevent the alternate version of himself from harming his family. Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Oakes Fegley, and Dayo Okeniyi star.
Airdate: TBD via Apple TV+.

16.Lady In The Lake”
Based on the novel by Laura Lippman and directed by Alma Har’el (“Honeyboy“), the mini-series centers on an investigative journalist working on an unsolved murder in 1960s Baltimore clashes with a woman working to advance the agenda of the city’s black community. “Lady In The Lake” was written by Har’el, Boaz Yakin, and more, and stars Natalie Portman, Moses Ingram, David Corenswet, Y’lan Noel, Mikey Madison, Brett Gelman Noah Jupe, Mike Epps, and more.
Premiere Date: TBD via Apple TV+.

15. “Three Women”
In an intimate, haunting portrayal of American female desire, three women are on a crash course to radically overturn their lives. The drama stars Shailene Woodley, DeWanda Wise, Betty Gilpin, Gabrielle Creevy, Blair Underwood, and Lola Kirke. Laura Eason, a writer on “The Loudest Voice,” showruns the series alongside executive producers like the book author Lisa Taddeo and Emmy Rossum. 14.Shōgun”
A remake of the 1980 series of the same name, based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, “Shōgun,” is led by a primarily Asian cast, including Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano. The story follows“the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai.” The feudal Japan set series is seen through the eyes of an English sailor, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who is shipwrecked in a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him.
Airdate: February 1 via FX/Hulu.

13. “Dune: Prophecy”
A deeply troubled production with a lot of showrunner turnover (Alison Schapker is the latest, but names like Jon Spaihts and Scott Z. Burns were once involved) and a pilot that was scrapped and redone, let’s hope that’s the end of problems for the Bene Gesserit “Dune” spin-off. Set 10,000 years before Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster film,  the series stars Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Jodhi May Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jade Anouka, and Chris Mason. Anna Foerster (“Underworld: Blood Wars”) directs the pilot and several eps.
Airdate: Expected fall 2024 via HBO.

12. “Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Inspired by the Doug Liman film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Prime Video’s reimagining recasts Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. Created by Francesca Sloane and Glover (Phoebe Waller-Bridge dropped out), the premise is more or less the same: two assassins enter into a new phase of their marriage after agreeing to work for a mysterious spy agency. Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano all appear at some point.
Airdate: February 2, 2024, via Prime Video.

11. “Hacks” (Season 3)
Centering on the professional relationship between a young comedy writer and a legendary stand-up comedian, “Hacks” quickly became a big-time Emmy player for HBO. The main cast returns Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins, plus delicious supporting players like Paul W. Downs, Megan Statler, and Christopher McDonald. However, the strikes delayed the series, so it could show up later in the year.
Airdate: TBD via HBO.
