More than a decade ago, Martin McDonagh wowed audiences with his black comedy, “In Bruges.” That film features incredible performances from Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, and instantly made McDonagh one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. And since then, film fans have been hoping to see the filmmaker replicate that same tone and feeling in a new project. Well, it appears everyone might be in luck with the next McDonagh feature, “The Banshees of Inisherin.”
As seen in the trailer for ‘Banshees,’ the film follows the story of two friends who are going through a breakup. The only problem is that one of the friends isn’t sure why the other has decided to end their relationship. The situation quickly escalates, and soon, an entire town is involved in the squabble.
As mentioned, the film reunites Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who both starred in McDonagh’s acclaimed film, “In Bruges.” Joining that duo in the cast are Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon. ‘Banshees’ is written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who in addition to “In Bruges,” is the writer/director of the Oscar-winning film, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

In our review of the film from Venice, we said, “Nihilistic, gleeful, and sad, McDonagh manages to prop up all these confounding paradoxes, emotional, narrative, cinematic, or otherwise, into a big majestic soulful symphony on the sad, tragic futility of conflict and the perplexing, irrationality of human nature when it’s become stuck in its most stubborn gear.”
“The Banshees of Inisherin” arrives in theaters on October 21.
Here’s the synopsis:
Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN follows lifelong friends Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Padraic, aided by his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Padraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.
