‘The End We Start From’ Teaser Trailer: Jodie Comer’s New Apocalyptic TIFF Drama Opens December 8

BAFTA winner Jodie Comer came out of the gate so damn strong with her breakout turn in “Killing Eve,” and she’s shot up to the A-list ever since. Case in point, her new apocalyptic drama, executive produced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who also co-stars, is one of the most anticipated titles of the recently kicked off Toronto International Film Festival.

The film receives its world premiere at TIFF tomorrow, so naturally, the first teaser trailer and poster has been released. Additionally, Paramount’s Republic Pictures, who acquired North American rights to the dystopian drama during Cannes, have now given the film an Oscar-friendly December 8, release date, with the company still figuring out if that’s a wide or limted release.

The film centers on a new mother (Jodie Comer), her partner (Joel Fry), and their infant who are driven out of London into the English countryside by cataclysmic flooding in this adaptation of Megan Hunter’s prophetic bestseller.

Co-starring in the film are Mark Strong, Nina Sosanya, Gina McKee, Katherine Waterston, and the aforementioned Benedict Cumberbatch.

Here’s TIFF’s take on the film:

An apocalyptic drama that still makes room for hope, The End We Start From uses the language of genre to ask the only question that matters about our increasingly bleak future: What will you do? And why aren’t you doing it already?

The End We Start From is ultimately a cautionary tale, its characters moving episodically through various strata of social collapse. Fry (Cruella, Our Flag Means Death) dials down his substantial charm to play a man desperate to do good in a landscape that offers nothing but horrible options, while Mark Strong, Nina Sosanya, Gina McKee, Katherine Waterston, and Benedict Cumberbatch (who also produced the film) all contribute brief but indelible appearances.

“The End We Start From” opens December 8, and hopefully, you’ll be reading our review sometime tomorrow or the next day, depending on the hour when it screens.
