Everybody knows “The Housemaid’s Secret” is on the way, but not who would star in the sequel opposite Sydney Sweeney. Now we know, via the X account for the 2025 film: it’s “American Love Story” star Paul Anthony Kelly.
The role is a big get for the model-turned-actor, who’s quickly become an up-and-coming star for his recent turn as John F. Kennedy Jr in the FX limited series. “The Housemaid’s Secret” will be Kelly’s first big-screen role, and likely won’t be the last. He joins the aforementioned Sweeney on the sequel’s cast sheet, with Michele Morrone also expected to reprise her role, and Paul Feig to return as director.
It’s no surprise that Lionsgate wants to fast-track a sequel to “The Housemaid.” The film was a commercial smash hit late last year, grossing $133 million globally on a $19 million budget. Add in Sweeney’s significant star power, and greenlighting the follow-up in Freida McFadden‘s book series is a no-brainer. Now, Kelly’s casting is another shrewd move for Lionsgate, guaranteeing that a very particular female demographic shows up to the theater for this one.
Here’s a brief synopsis for “The Housemaid’s Secret” novel, courtesy of Audible
A psychological thriller continuing the story of Millie Calloway, who first appeared in “The Housemaid.” The narrative takes place in the Garrick household and involves secrets and deception. Millie navigates her new environment and encounters unsettling discoveries, driven by instincts informed by her past experiences. The book maintains suspense and intrigue familiar to McFadden’s readers. It serves as both a sequel and a suitable starting point for newcomers to the series. Fans of domestic suspense might find the story engaging and fast-paced.
Rebecca Sonnenshine returns to adapt “The Housemaid’s Secret” for the big screen, as she did for the 2025 film. Todd Lieberman also returns to produce via Hidden Pictures with Carly Elter and Alex Young; Feig and Laura Fischer also produce through Feig’s banner Pretty Dangerous Pictures. Sweeney is on board to executive produce alongside McFadden.
So, who else will join Sweeney, Kelly, and Morrone on “The Housemaid’s Secret”? Expect more casting news soon. As for a release date, expect the sequel in theaters sometime late next year.
