Well, that didn’t take long. Following its successful run at the box office, Lionsgate announced it’s officially moving forward with a sequel to “The Housemaid,” titled “The Housemaid’s Secret,” with production planned to begin as early as next year. Paul Feig is expected to return to direct, with Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone also expected to reprise their roles for the follow-up.
While many might be a little shocked by the quick turnaround, the films are based on established books authored by Freida McFadden, and the sequel’s development was likely already in the works before the studio got a real look at the audience interest after a $19 million domestic opening during a crowded holiday movie season. It has since earned an impressive $133 million globally (according to Forbes and the studio), with Lionsgate having a hit on their hands; it was only a matter of time before this announcement was made.

“It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with ‘The Housemaid’ and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences,” Feig said in an official statement as part of the sequel’s announcement made by Lionsgate.
Summary of the original McFadden book via Audible:
A psychological thriller continuing the story of Millie Calloway, who first appeared in “The Housemaid.” The narrative takes place in the Garrick household and involves secrets and deception. Millie navigates her new environment and encounters unsettling discoveries, driven by instincts informed by her past experiences. The book maintains suspense and intrigue familiar to McFadden’s readers. It serves as both a sequel and a suitable starting point for newcomers to the series. Fans of domestic suspense might find the story engaging and fast-paced.
Sonnenshine, who adapted ‘The Housemaid’ for the screen, will return to adapt the sequel for producers Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, alongside Feig and Laura Fischer of Feig’s banner Pretty Dangerous Pictures, who are also returning as producers, with Hidden Pictures’ Carly Elter and Alex Young, and Sweeney executive producing. McFadden will also serve as an executive producer on the sequel.
I’m sure fans of the novels and film are going to be very curious to see who Feig ends up casting alongside Sweeney and Morrone in “The Housemaid’s Secret.”
