HBO is very happy to be in business with Sam Levinson. The writer-director-producer is the mastermind behind the Emmy-winning hit drama “Euphoria.” And now, he is about to launch his latest HBO project, “The Idol.”
As seen in the teaser for “The Idol,” the new series from the creator of “Euphoria,” has all the style of the popular teen drama but with a heavy dose of sleaze. The series stars Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye. The latter of which is better known as the pop star, The Weeknd. “The Idol” features Depp as a rising musical star who finds herself caught up in a strange, somewhat dangerous romance with a Los Angeles club owner (Tesfaye).
Interestingly, “The Idol” recently underwent some major behind-the-scenes drama. The series was set to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Amy Seimetz, who is best known as the co-creator and director of “The Girlfriend Experience” series from Starz. However, HBO announced, “The Idol” was undergoing extensive behind-the-scenes changes, with Seimetz and various cast and crew being replaced.

Since that news was reported in April, not much has been known about the extent of the changes. It’s still unclear who took over the directing duties, though Levinson is reported to have stepped in at least partially. It’s also unclear when we might see “The Idol” hit HBO, as the teaser only says it’s “coming soon.”
