Season 2 of “Loki,” one of Marvel‘s most popular Disney+ shows, is still at least a year away. There’s still a lot about the next season to be excited about, though. Weirdo filmmaking team Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are on board to co-direct most of the upcoming season after they did the same on this year’s “Moon Knight.” And course, Tom Hiddleston is back as the trickster god, along with Owen Wilson as his TVA quasi-sidekick Mobius.

And now there’s word out on the first new cast member for “Loki” season 2. Deadline reports that “Blindspotting” star Rafel Casal has a major role in the upcoming season. A leaked photo from the show’s set leaked with Casal walking alongside Hiddleston and Wilson confirms the actor’s involvement. No word on who Casal plays, though.
“Loki” became the first Marvel Disney+ show to get renewed for a second season after it hit record viewership numbers. Critics loved it, too, praising Hiddleston’s performance and Sophia Di Martino‘s as Sylvie. The show follows Loki as a fish out of water after he gets into trouble with the Time Variance Authority (TVA for short) and navigates multiple timelines, bumping into numerous other Lokis along the way. The show ended on a cliffhanger that seemingly set up all kinds of multiversal weirdness for the rest of MCU‘s Phase 4, but nothing’s come of it so far. So, who’s to say if the high stakes of “Loki” have grander implications or just affect that show alone?
Casal co-wrote, produced, and starred with Daveed Diggs in 2018’s “Blindspotting.” The two later produced a spin-off TV show for Starz, debuting earlier this year, with Casal as showrunner. Starz recently renewed the series for a second season after the show earned some Indie Spirit Award and Gotham Award nominations for Best New/Breakthrough Series.
So, how does Casal factor into all the weird time-loopy antics of “Loki”? It may be a while to find out, but with Casal on board with Hiddleston and Wilson, the second is shaping up to be as good as the first.
