It’s been a long time since Mike Myers was at the center of a major comedy. Aside from two or three small film roles and the occasional TV commercial or late show appearance as Dr. Evil, Myers has become more of a ‘90s pop culture reference than a working actor. But he’s finally back in the spotlight with a new original series for Netflix called “The Pentaverate” in which he will, once again, play a multitude of different characters.
Here’s the show’s official synopsis and a breakdown of the eight characters Myers will portray:
What if a secret society of five men has been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347? As this new series begins, one unlikely Canadian journalist finds himself embroiled in a mission to uncover the truth and just possibly save the world himself. Remember, the Pentaverate must never be exposed!
- Ken Scarborough: An old-school Canadian news journalist who sets out to expose the Pentaverate and win his job back
- Anthony Lansdowne: A New England conspiracy theorist, determined to expose the Pentaverate
- Rex Smith: A far-right radio host and highly prominent conspiracy theorist
- Lord Lordington: The Pentaverate’s oldest and highest-ranking member.
- Bruce Baldwin: Former media mogul
- Mishu Ivanov: Ex-Russian oligarch
- Shep Gordon: Former Rock-N-Roll manager
- Jason Eccleston: A tech genius who invented the Pentaverate’s super computer, MENTOR
Myers’ involvement is enough to draw interest, but the story’s Illuminati-like evocations are especially ripe for satire in today’s conspiracy theory-hungry climate. This will be the first scripted project Myers has written and produced since 2008’s disastrous “The Love Guru.” All six episodes of “The Pentaverate” are directed by Tim Kirby, whose credits include “Brockmire,” “Veep,” and the pilot episode of “Fleabag.”
Supporting players include Ken Jeong (“Community”), Keegan-Michael Key (“Schmigadoon!”), Debi Mazar (“Younger”), Richard McCabe (“Wallander”), Jennifer Saunders (“Absolutely Fabulous”), and Lydia West (“Years and Years”). Among the list of producers are Jax Media representatives Tony Hernandez and Lilly Burns, who have helped steer lean, high-concept series like “Search Party,” “Broad City,” and “Russian Doll” to outsize success.
“The Pentaverate” will premiere on Netflix on May 8. You can watch the new teaser below:
