‘The Shrouds’ Teaser: David Cronenberg’s Latest Finally Hits Theaters Everywhere On April 25

At long last, David Cronenberg‘s latest will hit US theaters this Spring. And a new film from the body horror maestro himself may always cause for celebration, but “The Shrouds” feels particularly special.

Why’s that? Well, it may be Cronenberg at his most personal. Written by the director after his wife’s death, “The Shrouds” is a profound personal reckoning with grief done with Cronenberg’s signature clinical and ominous flair. And it may also be Cronenberg’s swan song as a director (but let’s hope that’s merely speculation).

Here’s an official synopsis for “The Shrouds,” courtesy of Janus Films and  Sideshow:

In an eerie, deceptively placid near-future, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy.

“The Shrouds” stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt.  Elizabeth Saunders, Jennifer Dale, and Eric Weinthal also star.  Steve Switzman and Jeff Yung round out the main cast.

Cronenberg writes and directs “The Shrouds.” Producers on the film include Saïd Ben Saïd, Martin Katz, and Anthony Vaccarello. “The Shrouds” is an SBS, Prospero Pictures & Saint Laurent Productions film in participation with Telefilm Canada, Eurimages, Ontario Creates in association with Sphere Films, Crave & CBC Films with the support of Canal +, OCS & the Centre National du Cinema et de L’image Animée.

“The Shrouds” had its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival last May, with additional festival screenings at TIFF, NYFF, and AFI Fest.

Cronenberg’s latest hits theaters in NYC and LA on April 18 before opening nationwide on Friday, April 25. Watch a new teaser for the film below.
