‘The Trashers’: Cooper Raiff’s Feature Is Not Moving Forward Due To Lack Of Financing

In a few short years, Cooper Raiff has established himself as one of the most interesting young filmmakers working today. His debut, the acclaimed “Shithouse,” caught everyone off guard in the best way possible. His next film, “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” showed that he is able to handle a film with a bigger budget. But even though Raiff has established himself in Hollywood, that doesn’t mean he’s able to secure financing, as he explained recently.

In a new interview with Deadline, Cooper Raiff talked about how his previously announced feature, “The Trashers,” isn’t moving forward anymore. Unfortunately, his funding fell through and he just can’t get the financing required to make the film.

“I want it to happen, but I don’t think [it will],” Raiff explained. “I love that script so much, and I want to direct it so bad, but it’s hard to make a movie and hard to get the support [required]. That movie’s a big movie and needs a big budget, and we didn’t get the money. So…it’s not happening.”

“The Trashers” was set to star David Harbour, Cooper Hoffman, and Olivia DeJonge. The film tells the story of a teenaged son of a Connecticut trash mogul and mob associate who is forced to run a minor league hockey team that his dad purchased.

But all is not lost for Raiff. Sure, he probably won’t get the chance to make “The Trashers,” but he’s back at Sundance with a new project—the TV drama series, “Hal & Harper.” That series tells the story of two siblings who wear their codependence on their sleeves. The series is produced by Lionsgate TV and is looking for a distributor. “Hal & Harper” stars Raiff, as well as Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo.

As mentioned, the series is looking for distribution, so it’s unclear when we might see it on our TV screens.
