After hearing many of his collaborators talk about how much they love working with him, it’s clear that Taika Waititi runs a fun set while making films and TV shows. But for some people, such as Natalie Portman, who are used to more buttoned-up productions, working with Waititi can be a bit daunting.
Speaking to Variety about the production of her new superhero film, “Thor: Love & Thunder,” Natalie Portman opened up about how she was a bit thrown off by how loose Taika Waititi can be about the script while on set. As you might expect, Waititi is prone to massive rewrites while working on a scene on set.
“There’s a script, but most days, he prefers to throw it completely away and just spitball,” Portman explained. “It’s a really baller way to work on a movie like this. It was daunting at first, because I was like, there’s no way for me to prepare. How am I supposed to do a good job? And then I think I learned how to enjoy it.”
“Thor: Love & Thunder” marks the return of Portman to the world of the MCU. Even though she appeared in “Avengers: Endgame,” she didn’t actually shoot any material for the Marvel Studios film and last showed up on set for “Thor: The Dark World” nearly a decade ago. Now, she’s returning, playing The Mighty Thor and working with a director like Taika Waititi. So, you might be able to understand why she felt a bit out of her element at first.
We’ll have to wait and see how the spitballing on set worked out when “Thor: Love and Thunder” arrives in theaters on July 8.
