Leading up to the release of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Tom Holland talked quite a bit about how this was the final film in his contract with Sony. This freaked out a lot of fans, who have been hoping that the actor would continue to play Peter Parker for years to come. (One of those fans is even producer Amy Pascal.) And now, with ‘No Way Home’ in the rearview mirror, box office records left in the dust, will he come back to play Spider-Man again in the future? Well, he’s not so sure.
Speaking to Deadline (full video below), while being interviewed alongside two other Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland was asked point-blank if he’s going to suit up as the superhero for another film in the future? His answer is…maybe. Or maybe not.

“The truthful answer—and I’ve done a whole press tour where all I do is lie—the truth is, and you’re not going to like the truth, is I don’t know the answer to that question,” said Holland. “[‘No Way Home’], for me, was as special as an experience could ever be…I don’t know, there’s part of me that feels like it’s the perfect time to jump off the building and swing off into the sunset, and let the next lucky young kid come in to don the suit.”
“I know I love this character. I know I’m not ready to say goodbye,” he added. “But if it is time to say goodbye, I will do so proudly knowing that I have achieved everything I wanted to as this character…So, if it’s time, it’s time. If it’s not, it’s not.”
Sure, it would seem ridiculous to think Sony wouldn’t just unload a dump truck full of money on his doorstep to convince Holland to return. ‘No Way Home’ has not only become the most successful ‘Spider-Man’ film of all time, but it’s also one of the most successful films, period. So, you would assume the studio would do anything possible to ensure the star returns.
That said, if there’s a perfect time to step away, this would be it. ‘No Way Home’ effectively wipes the slate clean and sets up a new beginning for the character in a way that could easily transition to a new actor taking the role. So, if Holland was looking for a way to expand his horizons and not do a semi-annual ‘Spider-Man’ film for the next decade, this is the best time to do that. He’d leave a legend in the eyes of fans and end on the biggest high-note for the franchise, ever.
But again, let’s be real. Everyone else definitely wants him to return and will probably pay him handsomely to do so. If Tom Holland isn’t Spider-Man in a new film in a couple of years, then the only person who made that happen is the actor himself. And he’d probably be turning down a huge payday in the process.
