‘Top Gun 3’: Christopher McQuarrie Says They’ve “Cracked” A Story, Hasn’t Given Much Thought To Directing it

There have been all sorts of hints toward when we could end up seeing Tom Cruise‘s “Top Gun 3” come together and while we’re still waiting on a things like production start and release dates, there is a very optimistic update from Christopher McQuarrie, who helped with the script on “Top Gun: Maverick” and confirms a return for the gestating follow-up.

While chatting with host Josh Horowitz on his podcast Happy Sad Confused,” the filmmaker was asked if “Top Gun 3” is harder to crack than “Top Gun: Maverick.” To which McQuarrie was quick to point out they’ve already figured it out and dished a little insight on the film’s active development, which has “Maverick” co-writer Ehren Kruger returning alongside McQuarrie.

“It’s already in the bag…Yeah, I already know what it is, wasn’t hard. I thought it would be, and that’s a good place to go from…Ehren Kruger pitched something, and the framework is there, so, no, it’s not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is none of these are hard to crack,” McQuarrie said of the progress on “Top Gun 3.”

The filmmaker continued, “It’s not the scope or scale of action, the engineering of the action, it’s none of those things, it’s the emotion.” Citing the antagonistic relationship between Maverick and Miles Teller‘s Rooster being integral for the film to work, as soon as they start working together and mend their issues, the movie is essentially over.

“I’ve given that absolutely no thought whatsoever. I do, however, I have done a lot of research into how to make a Tony Scott movie,” McQuarrie responded when asked point-blank if he’d be taking over directing duties from an increasingly busy Joseph Kosinski. “I’m not the kind of director who gets squeamish about making a sequel to a Tony Scott movie.”

Will we see another professional conflict/rivalry for Maverick similar to his experiences with Iceman and Rooster in that sequel? That remains to be seen.

Some might remember that actor Timothée Chalamet had publicly gushed about his passion for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which has led plenty of folks to suggest that he be considered for a role in the third installment, either as another hot-shot pilot mentored by Cruise’s character or potentially play Maverick’s hypothetical estranged son.

I guess we’ll have to be patient to see when Paramount Pictures wants to get “Top Gun 3” in front of cameras as Cruise is gearing up to co-star with Ana de Armas (“Ballerina”) in Doug Liman‘s supernatural undersea blockbuster “Deeper,” which is in the middle of a bidding war.
