Got a Tip?

‘Triple Frontier’: Charlie Hunnam Is Working With Netflix On A Sequel To The J.C. Chandor Action Film

It’s difficult to quantify the viewership numbers for streaming films. All we really get are first-party numbers from the streamers directly, which are always used in a complimentary way. Basically, no streamer is going to admit a film horrifically bombed. That said, it’s clear when a streaming film isn’t a monumental cultural moment, as was the case with the 2019 film, “Triple Frontier.” Though it had solid viewership numbers, per Netflix, the action film wasn’t a runaway hit like “Extraction,” for example. However, it would appear the streamer is in the process of developing a sequel.

Speaking to The Mary Sue, Charlie Hunnam, one of the stars of the original “Triple Frontier,” revealed that he is working with Netflix on a way to bring a sequel to life. For those who didn’t see the original, “Triple Frontier” stars Hunnam alongside Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal as a group of ex-special forces soldiers who come together to perform a heist. The film earned decent reviews, but it didn’t perform as well as many hoped, given the cast and filmmaker J.C. Chandor being involved. But that isn’t stopping Hunnam from working on expanding the franchise.

“Nothing guaranteed, but I just set up recently as the main producer on a potential sequel to ‘Triple Frontier’ at Netflix,” Hunnam said. “So we’re working on that. It’s in its absolute infancy, but I feel like I’ve got a lot more to say about the sort of after life of military personnel. I’m really hopeful.”

Hunnam is an interesting actor nowadays. After an iconic role on the “Sons of Anarchy” TV series, he’s shown up in a number of massive projects without gaining a whole lot of traction as an A-lister. But even though he’s not necessarily the household name that someone like Affleck is, Hunnam still has an incredibly loyal following (thanks to the aforementioned series), so it’s not shocking that Netflix would want to get in business with him. (It probably doesn’t hurt that he is one of the stars of “Rebel Moon,” which is expected to be a massive hit with viewers, even if it’s getting savaged in reviews.)

Of course, given the state of the film industry, it’s difficult to pretend that a “Triple Frontier” sequel is a guarantee, especially when you have Hunnam saying it’s still in the very early stages of development. But hey, there’s some hope for those who are big fans of the original.
