We’re still reeling from the massively impressive results of the Memorial Day weekend box office as Disney‘s “Lilo & Stitch” has already made a whopping $341.7 million, but it’s not like Tom Cruise‘s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning“ wasn’t doing extremely well considering the strong competition from the House of Mouse.
Christopher McQuarrie‘s latest spy outing has a current worldwide box office gross of over $204 million, with $63 million of that coming from domestic audiences, which is nearly a $10 million bump from the $54 million domestic opening that “Dead Reckoning” earned back in 2023.
Cruise is celebrating the solid start by thanking Paramount Pictures, Skydance, the crew, department heads, cast, exhibitors, and audiences on social media.
“This weekend was one for the history books!” Cruise stated in a social media post. “Congratulations and thank you to every filmmaker, every artist, every crew member, and every single person who works at the studios. To every theater and every employee who helps bring these stories to audiences, thank you. To everyone that works at Paramount Pictures and Skydance, thank you for your many years of partnership and unwavering support,” the actor continued. “And most of all, THANK YOU to audiences everywhere for whom we all serve and for whom we all LOVE to entertain. Sincerely, Tom.”
A lovely sentiment from Cruise, who has quickly become an ambassador for Hollywood and the theatrical experience, as the star recently took time on the red carpet to praise films such as “Sinners” and “Ballerina.”
Making these last two “Mission: Impossible” films has not only been an expensive venture but also a stressful one. As soon as they started filming on “Dead Reckoning,” the COVID-19 pandemic exploded in Europe and the United Kingdom, leading the high-profile production to implement very strict safety protocols to keep the cameras rolling.
Leaked audio from a frustrated Cruise dressing down crew members for violating those protocols made the rounds online, but given the threat of a production shutdown and endangering the lives of co-workers, you can understand the anger at the time. Ultimately, all that is in the rearview as major productions have adapted to the new reality of a world with COVID-19.
Could this message thanking everyone for the success of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” be considered a goodbye to the franchise?
What comes next for “Mission: Impossible” isn’t entirely clear as Cruise is getting ready to reunite with Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow”) on the $200 million budgeted undersea supernatural blockbuster “Deeper” (currently undergoing a bidding war and has Ana de Armas circling a lead role) and is still poised for a return for the gestating “Top Gun 3,” that McQuarrie recently teased has a story locked down from co-writer Ehren Kruger (“Top Gun: Maverick”).
