Ivan Reitman’s 1988 comedy, “Twins,” is seen by many to be a classic. This was at a time when Arnold Schwarzenegger was just at his peak, and he was playing opposite Danny DeVito as actual twins. The jokes write themselves. For years after that film, the idea of a sequel, “Triplets,” had been discussed and developed, but decades later, nothing came to be. And now, according to Schwarzenegger, just as the sequel was finally going to happen, the whole thing just fell apart.
Speaking to THR, Arnold Schwarzenegger was asked about the status of “Triplets,” the much-anticipated sequel to “Twins.” The question has been lingering out there after the death of Ivan Reitman last year, as the filmmaker was seemingly ready to begin filming before his passing. Well, apparently, everyone was ready to go, but once Ivan Reitman’s son, filmmaker Jason Reitman, got his hands on it after his father passed, “Triplets” was shelved permanently.
“Jason Reitman fucked it up!” said Schwarzenegger. “Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died. His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly. Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly. We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, ‘I never liked the idea’ and put a hold on it. I’m developing another movie with Danny; he’s so much fun to work with and so talented.”
While it’s nice that DeVito and Schwarzenegger are developing another movie together, that’s a small consolation for those expecting “Triplets.” Over the past decade, the film had gotten closer and closer to production. At one point, Eddie Murphy was attached to star opposite Schwarzenegger and DeVito as their long-lost brother. Then, after delays, Murphy departed the project and was replaced by Tracy Morgan. That was the last update that was reported before the passing of Ivan Reitman. Now, it appears, the film is never going to happen, and Schwarzenegger is none too pleased.
Until we find out what Devito and he are working on next, you can check out Schwarzenegger in his new Netflix action-comedy series, “FUBAR,” which debuts on May 25.
