Variety reports that Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in Season 5 of “True Detective,” HBO‘s hit crime anthology series. If Cage signs on, he’ll be the latest in a string of A-listers to headline seasons of the show.  Previous leads for the series include Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in S1, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in S2, Mahershala Ali in S3, and Jodie Foster in S4.  Leading roles in “True Detective” are among the most coveted in TV, too, due to how they all but guarantee an Emmy nod.  Harrelson, McConaughey, Ali, and Foster all received Emmy nominations for their work on the series, with Foster winning both and Emmy and a Golden Globe for S4.

And that’s where Cage’s potential casting will raise some eyebrows. The actor may be a once-upon-a-time Oscar-winner, but he’s never worked in TV before.  Cage has also firmly been in the “actor-shaman” phase of his career for nearly two decades now, starring in nearly every script that comes his way and delivering bold, outlandish, over-the-top performances every other film.   It’s not that Cage is a bad actor; fans of his know he can do serious roles (“Adaptation,” which he got an Oscar nod for and, more recently, “Dream Scenario,”).  Rather, it’s whether he’s the right actor for a series like “True Detective.” It may come down to the show’s script and story. After all, no one expected McConaughey as Rust Cohle, a role that blew audiences away and started the “McConassaince” over a decade ago.

If Cage signs on for “True Detective” S5, then he’ll have two upcoming TV roles after never working in the medium before in his 40+ year career. The other is Spider-Man Noir,” a live-action series for Prime Video and MGM+, a show announced in 2024 and still slated for a 2026 release. Upcoming movie roles for Cage include the starring role in David O. Russell‘s “Madden,” the horror film “The Carpenter’s Son,” and “The Prince.” Two shows and three films is a busy schedule, but Cage has always been a prolific talent, so no surprises there.

As for “True Detective,” the show is coming off a resurgent fourth season, subtitled “Night Country,” that ended up the most-watched installment to date, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.  Issa López returns as writer and showrunner for S5, set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City. That means Cage would ostensibly play a NYC cop of some kind if he signs on, but plot and story details remain under wraps for now.

So let the debate begin: is Nic Cage starring in “True Detective” S5 a bold move by Issa López or a very stupid one? In all honesty, this could work very well, but let’s see how things develop in the coming months.
