“Bad Teacher” director Jake Kasdan is obviously doing something right because he’s a man who’s seemingly in high demand at the moment. He’s currently attached to direct the Shawn Levy-produced adaptation of “Man Made,” “Sex Tape” with Jason Segel, a Warner Bros action-comedy called “Family Getaway,” and an untitled project with his "Bad Teacher" writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. That’s what happens, we suppose, when your R-rated comedy rakes in over $200 million.
Universal now wants to hand Kasdan another project. He’s in negotiations to direct (and rewrite) the comedy script “My Spy” which is being produced by David Ready, Mark Vahradian and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, with the studio picking up in turnaround from CBS Films. There’s no details on what the film may be about, other than the suggestion that it’s in the vein of “Risky Business” and “Weird Science.” Variety suggests that due to “Sex Tape” still being in the development stage that this may take precedence and be the next Kasdan film that we see on the big screen.
We’re not sure whether we’ve been bowled over yet by anything Kasdan’s directed on the big screen — “Orange County,” “Bad Teacher” and “Walk Hard” all have their moments, but are all undeniably flawed too. We might be saying the same thing about “The TV Set” too if we were one of the 12 people who have seen it. The small screen is another matter entirely. You can’t complain about anyone who worked so extensively on ”Freaks and Geeks,” but you also can’t forget that he directed the “The New Girl” pilot which we weren't exactly huge on. But we’ll see which of these projects start moving forward, and if he can raise the comedic game he's already shown some solid promise on.
