Natalie Portman's Musical 'Vox Lux' Headlines First Looks At Upcoming Venice Films

This year’s Venice Film Festival might have the most stacked lineup ever seen at an event like this. With huge filmmaking names like the Coen Brothers, Alfonso Cuaron, Luca Guadagnino, and even Orson Welles, Venice looks to be the fall festival that will feature some of the biggest awards contenders this year. And now, as we approach the August 29 opening day, we are starting to get some first looks at some of the most high-profile films featured at the event.

While we already have trailers for a good number of the big projects, perhaps the one project that has the most intrigue is “Vox Lux,” starring Natalie Portman and Jude Law, from filmmaker Brady Corbet. “Vox Lux” is a musical that follows the 15-year-career of a musical superstar (played by Portman). In the first photo from the film, you can see just how decked-out Portman is as the pop idol. Corbet is making his return to Venice, after premiering his last film, “The Childhood of a Leader,” in 2015.

Another highly-anticipated film comes from the lone female filmmaker at the festival, Jennifer Kent. “The Nightingale” tells the story of a young Irish woman who chases down a British officer in Australia as she seeks revenge for violence committed against her family. Kent is probably best known for her breakout horror film “The Babadook,” and if the bloody picture from her latest film is any indication, it doesn’t appear that the filmmaker is pulling punches with her latest.

Other films with new looks are the Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, and John C. Reilly film “The Sisters Brothers,” Julian Schnabel’s Vincent Van Gogh film “At Eternity’s Gate,” starring Willem Dafoe, “Dragged Across Concrete,” starring Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn, and “The Mountain” from filmmaker Rick Alverson that stars Jeff Goldblum, Tye Sheridan, and Danielle Smith.

As mentioned above, the Venice Film Festival kicks off on August 29.
