'Walking Dead' Movies: New Video Teaser Reveals The Films Are Theatrical-Only Experiences Distributed By Universal

Despite a massive drop off in viewers and quality, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” keeps going strong, which means, the undead are definitely at San Diego Comic-Con with lots of news. First up, it’s the announcement that the still-untitled “The Walking Dead” movie, presumed to be a TV-only movie on AMC, will actually be a theatrical-only experience.

It’s actually a series of three feature films starring Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), and now they’ll be headed to the big screen. In a surprise announcement, unveiled in a quick teaser trailer for the film, AMC revealed Lincoln’s return would be seen, “only in theaters.” The AMC’s official Twitter account unveiled the movie would be a Skybound production and would be released by Universal Pictures.

News poured out of the two-hour back-to-back “Fear The Walking Dead” and “The Walking Dead” panels. Scott Gimple, the chief creative officer of The Walking Dead franchise announced, among other things, that “Fear The Walking Dead” had been renewed for a six season. The series will return August 11, and new cast members, Colby Minifie, Peter Jacobson and Colby Hollman were announced.

Gimple teased more ‘Walking Dead’ series’ to come. “The big secret is that there have been other civilizations that have survived the apocalypse,” he unveiled. “We are about to show a lot more.” This is mooted young adult-focused series set for 2020 about privileged, first-world teens who leave the comfort of their world to go on a quest. No other details were given, but the untitled series will “open up a whole new world.”  ‘Walking Dead’ is definitely getting into the YA business and the coming-of-age cast of the new still-untitled series includeAnnet Mahendru, Aliyah Royale, Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, and Hal Cumpston).

Meanwhile, in the flagship series news, AMC will debut its new season on October 6, and Danai Gurira confirmed her exit from the show. “I can confirm that this is the last season I will be on this amazing TV show as Michonne,” said Gurira, to a visibly sad audience. “I would just like to say that this has been one of the purest joys of my life to play this role and to be amongst these people and those who are not here right now and amongst all of you. I’m very thankful for the experience I’ve had in ways I can’t state right now. My heart does not leave in any way, shape, or form. The ‘TWD’family is forever. The connection between us never ends.”

Considering her bustling film career, this isn’t much of a surprise. Gurira will likely appear in “Black Panther 2” whenever that film arrives. Watch the new ‘Walking Dead’ teaser below, but it’s like less than 30 seconds and don’t expect a lot.
