Now, these are more like it. Only earlier today, we were talking around the Playlist water cooler about how the marketing for “Anchorman: The Legend Continues,” which has involved a slightly underwhelming teaser trailer, Will Ferrell shooting 70 (!) in-character Dodge Durango ads, and as of yesterday, a Ben & Jerry’s flavor called “Scotchy Scotch Scotch,” has risked turning Ron Burgundy from the central character of the funniest pure comedy of the ’00s to a corporate pitchman whose new movie was looking worryingly disappointing.
But by the beard of Zeus, this morning has seen the arrival of two full trailers for the movie, which barely share any footage with each other, and they contain more laughs than most comedies we’ve seen this year in less than five minutes. The international one is certainly the best, with a hint of the theme that director Adam McKay‘s going for, a return to the Sex Panther-style joke with Brian Fantana’s Jimmy Cabinet, and Harrison Fucking Ford. But there’s good stuff to be found in the U.S. version as well.
We’re still trying to keep our expectations in check here—that kind of “Anchorman” magic is hard to replicate, and we’re a little concerned about how closely some scenes seem to be repeating from the original. But McKay and Ferrell’s films are always hard to judge from the trailer; let’s not forget how many scenes from the original film’s promo didn’t make it into the final film. We’ll see how it all turns out when it hits on December 20th. [Empire]
