Watch: 9-Minute Tribute To The Films Of Michael Mann

The Films Of Michael MannThere are few filmmakers quite like Michael Mann. As a stylist he makes radical choices with light, composition and focus, and while his films work as popular entertainment, they often run with rich thematic undercurrents. In short, his style deepens the storytelling.

Vimeo user Tom Kramer has created a gorgeous tribute to Mann’s extraordinary career from his early work on film to his transition to a pioneer of shooting on digital. It’s also an eye-opening reminder of Mann’s visual poetry, and his unparalleled work when it comes to nighttime photography. Out of their genre context, one could assume these images had come from an art film or something from Terrence Malick (if he made films in contemporary cityscapes), but they carry a look that is distinctly Mann.

Watch the exhilarating video below (and kudos to Kramer’s excellent use of Brian Eno‘s "An Ending (accent)" in his supercut). Warning, there are spoilers for a couple of his films featured in this montage. And be sure to read our retrospective of his work right here. [35MM]
