After Seth MacFarlane stunk up the joint with his frat boy antics during last year’s Oscar show, the Academy course corrected and asked Ellen DeGeneres back to the stage (she hosted in 2007) and it was good choice. And in case you missed it, we’ve got the full opening monologue for you to check out.
Thankfully ditching an opening musical number, DeGeneres just hit the stage and delivered a ten minute standup routine, that poked fun at the nominees without ever being Ricky Gervais level mean (though it could’ve used that element of danger). It was unoffensive, but pleasantly so, setting the table for a show that was amiable if never quite outrageously fun. In short, DeGeneres did fine, classing up the joint for an affair that never got too rowdy (and as the hours dragged on, more sleepy).
Check out in full below — it was easily the best part of DeGeneres’ night which included an extended gag about ordering pizza of which we’ll spare you.
