You can keep your movies, because Steven Soderbergh prefers the TV realm. Why? Creative freedom, and that’s not really a surprise at this point. “This, for me, is just looking like a better space to play in,” Soderbergh told Vanity Fair. “The conversations aren’t fear-based. Nobody’s questioning. The conversation is about ‘Can it be better’; it’s not ‘Can this person be more likeable, can we eliminate all the ambiguity in this area.’”
And so, following "The Knick," and before the upcoming "The Girlfriend Experience," the next small screen offering from Soderbergh is "Red Oaks." Housed over at Amazon, Soderbergh is a producer on the series that has survived the streaming service’s pilot battle, with all ten episodes dropping this week. And to hopefully hook you, Amazon has put the first episode, in full, online, and it boasts none other than David Gordon Green behind the camera.

The ’80s set series is led by Craig Roberts, who plays a 20-year old kid in New Jersey who works at country club while trying to figure out his future. It’s not exactly an easy sell, but perhaps that’s what makes it so special. “It’s not like something that people are banging down your door, saying let’s have a kind of serious comedic, ’80s country-club story,” Green said.
But everyone involves hopes you’ll take a chance on it. Also featuring Jennifer Grey, Richard Kind, Paul Reiser, Gage Golightly, Oliver Cooper, Alexandra Turshen, and Ennis Esmer, "Red Oaks" is now streaming. Watch below.
