Trying to making people laugh for a living can be tricky business. Standing in front of a microphone, or getting on stage to improv, puts any performer face to face with failure, or with success — there’s very little in between. And there are only a few types of people who can manage that kind of emotional tightrope-walking in a professional career, and Mike Birbiglia explores those very personalities in his upcoming “Don’t Think Twice.”
Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher, Chris Gethard, and Birbiglia himself, the writer/director/comedian/actor’s followup to “Sleepwalk With Me” tracks the lives of six performers and friends in New York City as they chase success, and what happens when some find themselves on the cusp of stardom and others don’t. Our A-grade review from SXSW called the effort “an honest and sharply drawn account of the eternal questions of ego, friendship, and sacrifice” and an “accomplished and very funny film.”
