At the Oscars on Sunday night, the annual Memoriam segment closed with Philip Seymour Hoffman, arguably the greatest loss to cinema to occur over the past year. In fact, watching his face for those few extra seconds before Bette Midler came out and poured “Wind Beneath My Wings” all over the moment, made us feel that pang of his passing all over again. It’s hard to believe that there will be no more new movies starring Hoffman (though “A Most Wanted Man” and “God’s Pocket” were completed before his death—and just played Sundance— while the filmmakers behind “The Hunger Games” are figuring out a workaround for the scenes he was unable to lens).
So now is a time to look back, and thankfully, Hoffman left behind an enviable catalog of work. Caleb Slain has put together a pretty impressive 20-minute tribute reel, “P.S. Hoffman,” that dives pretty deep and hard into the actor’s films both big and small. While all his most well known roles are represented, there’s also shine to movies you might have overlooked (“Mary and Max” in particular is fantastic) or forgot he was in (“Along Came Polly“) or deserve more attention (“Love Liza“). But mostly it’s reminder that no matter how big or small the role or movie, Hoffman was usually terrific.
