Independent animation distributor GKIDS has announced that an English language version of the Academy Award-nominated "A Cat in Paris," will be released on American shores (in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego) on June 1st. Among the vocal cast assembled for this new version are Angelica Huston, Marcia Gay Harden, Matthew Modine and Steve Blum. This is being seen as the beginning of a wider platform release.
"A Cat in Paris," directed by Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol, was originally released in France back in 2010 and concerns a young girl whose cat helps her solve a mystery over the course of one atmosphere-heavy night. Last year it was nominated for Best Animated Feature, one of two foreign language animated films in a category usually dominated by Pixar and DreamWorks Animation. (The other foreign language film, "Chico and Rita," was also distributed by GKIDS.)
GKIDS, an acronym for the slightly more threatening-sounding Guerrilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate, holds the New York International Children's Film Festival every year, and has been responsible for releasing such under-the-radar animated gems as "Summer Wars" and "The Secret of Kells" (also nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar). Last year they wrangled from Disney the domestic theatrical distribution rights to 13 Studio Ghibli titles, including "Spirited Away" and a little-seen TV movie called "Ocean Waves," which is something of a coup, especially since GKIDS screens the original subtitled Japanese version of the films, sometimes for the first time. (Disney would typically release the dubbed version, supervised by a team they had put together.)
We still haven't seen "A Cat in Paris" but we hear it's absolutely wonderful and we're thrilled that a new version of the film will be available for everyone to enjoy. And the trailer for the film is below is very, very promising.
