Jesus Christ, does this “Fraggle Rock” image scream “edgy” to you?
Of course not, but according to a blog post written by director/writer Corey Edwards (via /film), the filmmaker is a little worried that The Weinstein Company is messing with his “Fraggle Rock” baby because it’s apparently “not edgy enough.”
Umm, did TWC ever even watch this kids series? Apparently they want to overhaul the new script and are looking for new writers. Edwards writes:
“Not to be too alarmist, but I am struggling to stay in control of my own movie at this point. The Weinstein Company gives me no confidence these days. Why? For starters, they have begun the search for a new writer, presumably to rewrite my entire script from scratch. Now I’m a big boy — I can take the blow if my skills are not up to the high, high standards of the Weinstein Company (he said with too much sarcasm in his voice). But this is happening behind my back, without consulting me or even asking my opinion. I enjoy working with other writers and have no doubt that the RIGHT person could help make any script better. But to not even ask me? Adding insult to injury, the search is basically an open assignment. This means the net has been cast wide, virtually posting in the “classifieds” of the movie business. The Fraggles do not deserve such treatment.
Poor Fraggles indeed. We would say maybe this just means we won’t have to suffer an unnecessary “Fraggle Rock” movie, but hey, it’s probably being aimed at kids (or was anyhow, maybe it’ll go XTREME Fraggles now!), and rugrats need movies too. We just generally choose not to see them. Either way, it sucks when a filmmaker gets his project taken away from him, but it wouldn’t be the first time the Weinstein Company has pulled such a move. That’s Harvey’s trademark from the Miramax “Harvey Scissorhands” days and even during the TWC era it’s already happened to films like “Fanboys” (which perhaps deserved it as it sucked). Other TWC pictures like “Shanghai” and “All Good Things” seemed to face similar issues and were either shelved, delayed or simply bought back by the filmmaker in the case of the latter film starring Ryan Gosling and Kristen Dunst.
No release date on “Fraggle Rock” as it’s still very much in development or now maybe re-development. Poor guy, that’s Hollywood for you. Just be grateful if you keep your shirt.
