Will J.J. Abrams Help Bong Joon-ho Make His Hollywood Debut?

File this under a rumor for now, but it’s a hell of an intriguing prospect.

/Film are reporting they are hearing that director/producer extraordinaire J.J. Abrams will be collaborating with Bong Joon-ho on a future feature project that would mark the director’s Hollywood debut. There are no details on the project except that Abrams has met with Bong last year in Korea and the proposed film would find Abrams producing and Bong directing.

Obviously both men are quite busy, so if this is true and does come to fruition it could be a ways off. Bong is filming the previously announced, Park Chan-wook-produced “Snow Piercer” next and it’s not getting in front of cameras until 2011. And Abrams has his hands full directing “Super 8” and “Star Trek 2” within the next 18 months as well as producing “Mission: Impossible 4,” so we don’t see this pairing is likely to happen until 2012 at the earliest.

And really, while it could be potentially interesting, Bong’s sensibility is so unique we fear his voice could get lost in trying to conform to mainstream audiences. His last effort, the excellent “Mother,” is exactly the kind of project that would never get made in Hollywood. Unless he needs the financing that only Abrams could drum up for some kind of dream project, we hope he’s in no rush to start apartment hunting in Los Angeles.
