Fans of “Community” have been waiting patiently for years to learn when they can expect “Community: The Movie,” a feature version of the beloved satirical show at Peacock that focused on a rag-tag study group on a community college campus. There is now a bit of an explanation of why things are taking so long for the feature spinoff to get in front of cameras.
Andrew Guest, a co-writer on the “Community” film and the co-creator/showrunner of the new Marvel Television series “Wonder Man,” spoke with The Ringer podcast “The Watch” (via Entertainment Weekly) and gave a bit of a reveal of why those delays have been happening and how it nearly went into production back in 2023.

“We got very close to shooting that,” Guest revealed. “As the writers’ strikes and actors’ strikes were ending [in 2023], all of our cast were available. All of them wanted to do it. We had a line producer. We had a script that we were in the process of starting to rewrite, and one of our actors’ projects sort of came in conflict in terms of timing.”
Adding, “The fun and energy of that show is the chemistry between these people in the same room, around a table. So we have to have them all in the same place at the same time.”
It should be noted that show creator Dan Harmon (co-writer with Guest on “Community: The Movie”) is a very busy person, overseeing two animated series with AdultSwim‘s “Rick & Morty” and Fox‘s “Krapopolis.” There is also a spinoff set in the world of the former series, with Keith David‘s “President Curtis” getting his own show debuting later in the year, co-created by Harmon and James Siciliano.
Established cast members of “Community” such as Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash, who are expected to be part of the film’s lineup. We’re a little uncertain about the participation of folks like Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown, but given that it’s a film shoot, they might be able to woo them back.
