'Wonder Woman 1984': Patty Jenkins Decided To Bring Chris Pine Back Before The First Film Was Even Done

One of the first major reveals about the upcoming “Wonder Woman” sequel is the fact that Chris Pine, aka Steve Trevor, returns from the dead and makes the time-jump to 1984 to hang out with Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince. But outside of the fact that we know Pine is returning, the means of his resurrection and what it does to the story are still unknown. But as Patty Jenkins explained in an interview with IGN, the return of Steve Trevor is a decision that was made well before the first film even hit theaters.

“The shape of this came to me, I’d say, midway through shooting the first movie,” said Jenkins. “It was not born from, ‘Oh shit, that was so great, we have to get Steve back.’ All of the story is one story that fits hand in hand.”

Whenever you bring a character back from the dead in fiction, no matter the method, fans are going to be worried. Is it the best thing to do for the story? Does it make sense? Did the storytellers bring the character back in the “right way?” Well, according to Pine, he’s not sure what the “right way” means, but he’s happy with how he returns in the sequel.

“You can decide whether it’s the right way or not,” said Pine. “I love Patty and I love Gal and that I’m working on this film. I think it’s romantic and old-fashioned in the best way, and simple in the best way, and doesn’t reinvent the wheel in the best way. It’s just great, good old fashioned storytelling. So, ‘right’? I have no idea, but I know that anytime Patty pitches something with me, she can pitch me anything. She’s the single best pitcher of ideas I’ve ever come across in the history of pitching.”

As for how this reunion is going to play out in the film, Gal Gadot isn’t spilling the details. However, she does hint that the Steve and Diana that we meet in ‘WW84’ are not the same people they were in the original film.

“He’s not who he used to be, she’s a little different,” she said. “It plays from a different place because Steve was her first love and the first man she ever fell in love with. And she was very young when she met him and he kind of opened her eyes and discovered the world for her. In a way, literally with romance and with the world itself. Now their relationship is much more mature and there’s been so many longings and you know, it’s true that you know what you had only after you lose it.”

Obviously, we’ll have to wait until we see “Wonder Woman 1984” before we find out how Steve Trevor, and thus, Chris Pine, are returning. But as Jenkins explained, even if she revealed how he came back, fans won’t be satisfied until they see it in the context of the film.

“You’d still have to see the movie to really understand it,” she said.

“Wonder Woman 1984” is set to arrive in theaters on October 2. For now, at least.
