Zack Snyder Says His Kurosawa-Influenced 'Star Wars' Idea Has Morphed Into A Separate "Sci-Fi Thing"

Years and years ago, Zack Snyder was reportedly interested in tackling a “Star Wars” film for Lucasfilm. The film was said to be Kurosawa-inspired and would take place in the galaxy far, far away. However, as we know now, things changed and that feature was never given the green light. But in a recent interview with Happy. Sad. Confused., Zack Snyder shed some light on what happened to that film and why it still could be made, without the “Star Wars” branding.

“We talked about it, but it never [happened],” the filmmaker explained. “I’ve been working on it away from the ‘Star Wars’ universe, on my own, as a sci-fi thing…It’s still a sci-fi thing. It’s the same story. Now, I’m just going to let ‘Star Wars’ be ‘Star Wars.’”

Snyder said the discussions about the film happened after the prequels were released and right before Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, so there weren’t any “Star Wars” features in the works. While he wasn’t keen on sharing specifics about how his original idea would have connected to “Star Wars,” he did say that the film didn’t feature any characters that had already appeared, and was an entirely separate thing in the universe.

“It was me saying, ‘Give me the keys and let me take it for a spin,’” Snyder said.

But now that the untitled sci-fi film is reworked to not exist in the galaxy far, far away, the filmmaker thinks there’s still a chance that it could happen.

“The 11-year-old me still wants to make that, and now, I know how to,” he added. “So, maybe we’ll see that someday.”
