It really seemed like an inevitability that no one was ready to face outside of Terry Gilliam: the long gestating “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” the cinematic mountain he’s stared down for years, would never be climbed. There’s been so many iterations of the film that have fallen apart it’s hard to keep track of them. Ewan McGregor was the lead in recent years, then up and comer Jack O’Connell seemed poised to take the starring role, but every version of the film fell apart (this is naming just two of many variants of the film that were deep-sixed).
But Gilliam found a willing, and more important now-bankable star, in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” villain Adam Driver and it appears it’s full steam ahead for a film that co-stars fellow Monty Python alum Michael Palin, Olga Kurylenko and now apparently also Willem Dafoe and Stellan Skarsgard, according to the website of production company Entre Chien & Loup.
The plot of the movie, which has been retooled a few times, now apparently centers on an arrogant publicist, who returns to the village where he shot his student film adaptation of “Don Quixote” (meta), only to discover the terrible effect his project had on the town, leading to an unlikely adventure.
The film hasn’t shot yet, but last we heard it was lensing in the fall. Netflix will release the film presumably sometime in 2017. But until this thing is locked, keep your fingers crossed. [via Den Of Geek]
