“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story“
One of the most anticipated films to premiere at TIFF is the hyperbolic biopic of Weird Al Yankovic. “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” sees Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al, as we see his rise from accordion player to one of the most well-known parody lyricists. The film is directed by Eric Appel, who teamed up with Al Yankovic to write the film. Radcliffe shares the screen with Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Toby Huss, Arturo Castro, and Julianne Nicholson.
“Chevalier“
“Chevalier” is based on the life of Joseph Bologne, the son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, who is on the path to success before a love affair ensues, complicating his dreams. Kelvin Harrison Jr. gives a dynamic performance in an intriguing and romantic story told by director Stephen Williams. “Chevalier” sees Minnie Driver and Samara Weaving as love interests for Bologne and also stars Lucy Boynton, Ronke Adekolujoe, Marton Csokas, and Alex Fitzalan.
“Devotion“
Set in the Korean War and adapted from the Adam Makos bestseller of the same name, “Devotion” tells the true story of the US Navy’s first Black aviator Jesse Brown and his wingman Tom Hudner. The two pilots share a mutual dedication to their work and form a bond that will help them navigate combat, geopolitical uncertainty, and racist hostility. The film is directed by JD Dillard, adapted by Jake Crane and Jonathan A. H. Stewart, and stars Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell, and Joe Jonas.
“My Policeman“
A love story following a young police officer who conforms to everything expected of him but finds himself torn between his passion for Patrick, a museum curator, and the love he has for Marion, an earnest schoolteacher. The Harry Styles film that people are actually excited to see, “My Policeman,” is based on the novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts and puts Styles opposite Emma Corrin and David Dawson. The film is directed by Michael Grandage.
