This week marks the beginning of the 47th Toronto International Film Festival. Films premiering in Toronto as well as those that have already premiered at festivals such as Cannes and Venice, are generating a lot of interest online, which makes festivalgoers excited that after taking caution due to the COVID pandemic, TIFF is back in person this year. While our team has already covered Telluride and Venice, TIFF tends to have some of the most impressive premieres. Some of the highly anticipated events to come out of the festival include “The Whale,” which stars Brendan Fraser, who has already been the recipient of TIFF’s Tribute Award for his performance, Park Chan-wook‘s “Decision To Leave,” as well as an appearance by Taylor Swift for the “In Conversation With…” series.

While we don’t know that any premiere will get as much online attention, whether good or bad, as the premiere of “Don’t Worry Darling,” we can’t wait to see the films coming to Toronto and the road they pave on their way to the Academy Awards.
“The Woman King“
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, “The Woman King” tells the story of Nawi as she petitions for entry into the Agojie, the all-female military regiment charged with protecting the Kingdom of Dahomey. Nawi proves herself but struggles with Agojie’s rules and long-buried secrets. The epic stars Academy Award-winner Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, and John Boyega.
“The Fabelmans“
Bringing Steven Spielberg to the Toronto International Film Festival for the first time is his most personal film yet. “The Fabelmans” focuses on Speilberg’s passion for moviemaking and the family dynamics that have found their way into his films. The special presentation stars Paul Dano, Michelle Williams, and Seth Rogan.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery“
This “Knives Out” mystery finds Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc on a Greek Island. Unsure of why he’s there, he comes across a group of people all with their own secrets, but could one of them be a murderer? We will find out. The suspects include Edward Norton, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Madelyn Cline, and Jessica Henwick. “Glass Onion” is directed by Rian Johnson.
“The Menu“
Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult play a young couple who travel to a remote, self-contained, farm-to-table island to eat at an exclusive restaurant. The chef of the restaurant, played by Ralph Fiennes, serves each course with a monologue, hoping that his guests fall into his menu of manipulation. “The Menu” is directed by Mark Mylod and written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy.
